Not a toner based system but solid "wax" eliminates 99% of the mess . The per page cost for the "toner stick" is very good, and was an initial reason for us purchasing the printer. It's photo printing is the best that can be found IMHO

In the 3 years we have had the printer the only original part left is the case itself. EVERYTHING else has had to be replaced due to failure after failure
