Amazon Echo Show (2018) review: Much-needed refinements

Amazon's latest Echo Show is a huge upgrade over the original. It has a more modern design, fantastic audio quality, comes with two built-in browsers and features step-by-step recipes; some even have video tutorials. It now has more robust...

Improved streamlined design Outstanding sound quality ; Supports NBC and Hulu (including Hulu Live) ; Built-in browser lets you watch YouTube ; Step-by-step recipes with video instructions

Display quality is only so-so ; Isn’t fully compatible with Nest Hello video doorbell ; Not compatible with YouTube TV

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen, 2018)

The new Amazon Echo Dot delivers dramatically improved sound, making it an even better buy for an entry-level Alexa speaker.

Much better sound than previous model. Still the best inexpensive Alexa speaker. 3.5mm jack for more powerful speakers. Alexa remains the best voice ecosystem for smart home control.

Alexa isn't up to Google Assistant's level at answering broad information queries.

The new Echo Dot is good enough to be the default Alexa speaker in most rooms of your home. It no longer sounds horribly tinny, and it's half the price of the bigger Echo. If you want better sound, you can easily hook it up to a larger speaker of your...

Amazon Echo Sub

The Amazon Echo Sub provides much-needed sub-bass to your Echo smart speaker as long as you're willing to overlook some frustrating limitations.

Small and inexpensive. Successfully rounds out low frequency response when used with an Echo or Echo Plus.

Not particularly powerful or booming. Only works with Echo speakers. Doesn't work with Bluetooth connections to Echo speakers.

Bottom Line: The Amazon Echo Sub provides much-needed sub-bass to your Echo smart speaker as long as you're willing to overlook some frustrating limitations.

Amazon Echo Show (2018)

The 2018 model of the Amazon Alexa-powered Echo Show smart display is a major upgrade over the original, with a larger, more functional touch screen and a much more powerful speaker system.

Feature-rich touch-screen interface. Friendly design with big, bright screen. Powerful audio. Web browser.

Heavily sculpted sound emphasizes extremes and downplays midrange. Screen only supports 720p video.

Bottom Line: The 2018 model of the Amazon Alexa-powered Echo Show smart display is a major upgrade over the original, with a larger, more functional touch screen and a much more powerful speaker system.

Amazon Echo Show 2018 review: bigger screen and better sound aren’t enough

New screen, same Show

Much improved sound quality ; Bigger screen is much nicer to look at ; Design is more pleasing to the eye ; Software is more capable and easier to use

Still largely limited to Amazon services ; No hardware shutter to block the camera ; Screen-based skills are still lacking ; YouTube experience is laughably bad

At the end of the day, if I’m going to commit to having an always-on, internet-connected screen sitting on my countertop all the time, I want it to do more than the Echo Show.

'Alexa, do these jeans make my ass look fat?'

The fashion-centric camera takes voice-activated selfies and short videos to help you sift through your wardrobe.

The $200 Amazon Echo Look lets you take voice-activated full-body selfies and short video clips that make it easy to catalog and keep track of your wardrobe. The hallmark feature, Style Check, provides input when you're comparing two outfits, and the...

The sound quality stinks. The app is missing features that would make it a more useful style adviser. It's more expensive than other smart speakers in the Amazon family. And privacy concerns? I have a few.

The Echo Look provides an objective second opinion on what you should wear. But if fashion's not your bag, opt for one of Amazon's cameraless, cheaper Echo speakers.

The new Amazon Echo is better than the first -- and a lot less expensive

Alexa's new flagship smart speaker is better than the first one -- and it costs a lot less, too.

With a variety of new designs, the new Amazon Echo is better-looking than the original, just as smart and a lot less expensive. The addition of an aux-out jack lets you connect it with your existing audio setup. It's also a slightly better listener...

Though fine for casual listening and strong enough to fill a room with music, the Echo still doesn't sound as good as premium, high-fidelity speakers. The volume ring of the original is gone, replaced with the cheaper volume buttons of the Echo Dot.

Alexa is still the most compelling voice control platform, and the new and improved Echo should only boost her momentum. It's well worth $100.

Amazon Echo Spot review: Alexa's touchscreen fails to impress

The Echo Spot is basically an Echo Dot with a touchscreen -- and the combination is less compelling than you might have guessed.

The Echo Spot is a well-made device with a good-looking design, and it's handy for quick, voice-activated video calls. Sound quality was better than we expected, and noticeably better than the Echo Dot's.

The Echo Spot doesn't currently support YouTube, nor does it offer many video sources for your flash briefings. The touchscreen adds less than it should to the Alexa experience, and it's too small to be helpful unless you're within a few feet of the...

The Echo Spot is a fine for what it is, but Amazon still hasn't done enough to convince us that Alexa needs a touchscreen at all.

Amazon Echo: The speaker of the house

Amazon's smart speaker was arguably the breakout product of 2015. Two years later, Alexa is still going strong.

Amazon's voice-activated smart home speaker is undeniably futuristic, but it's also practical and accessible. With a rapidly growing slate of features, integrations and use cases, it's easy to get excited about the Echo's potential.

The Echo's sound quality is slightly uneven at times, with weak bass at high volumes. It also can't distinguish between different voices like the Google Home smart speaker can.

More than two years after its debut, the smarter-than-ever Amazon Echo remains one of the best connected home products money can currently buy.

The Amazon Echo Plus doesn't quite add up

The Echo Plus is a great smart speaker, but a mediocre smart hub. In most cases, you're better off just getting the Echo.

The Echo Plus keeps the original Echo's design (and its beloved volume ring) while adding in an aux-out jack, a Zigbee radio to control smart home devices, and an incremental boost in sound quality. It costs $30 less than the original Echo.

The Plus also costs $50 more than the new Echo, which has everything the Plus has except for Zigbee. The Alexa app isn't the fully capable smart home control center that the Echo Plus needs it to be, at least not yet.

Hold off on the Echo Plus until Amazon improves the Alexa app's smart home controls.
